In June 29th 2021, edX inc and 2U inc released a joint statement revealing a signed deal by which 2U, a global leader in the EdTech space, will acquire all edX assets, including the edX brand, website, and marketplace. The fusion between these two companies plans to significantly increase the number of learners and digital programs in a new education marketplace.
2U is a global leader in education technology and a trusted partner of several universities. It provides an integrated solution consisting of cloud-based software-as-a-service (SaaS) combined with technology-enabled services that allows colleges and universities to deliver online degree programs.
edX inc is a non-profit organization founded by Harvard and MIT in 2012 with the mission of improving access to education. It is a massive open online course (MOOC) provider that has partnered with more than 90 of the world’s top universities, non-profits, NGOs, and corporations to bring education and valuable skill-building to online learners.
According to the disclosed details of the deal, edX founders, Harvard University and MIT, will set up a separate non-profit organization with the additional funding received and dedicate this organization to further develop the Open edX platform, fulfilling their mission of improving the quality and access of online education worldwide.
The Open edX platform will continue to be improved and remain open source, which constitutes great news for all the open edX community and for any initiative currently powering their courses with the Open edX platform.
Along with the Open edX platform, key initiatives such as the Open edX Community, the Preferred Provider program and the Core Committers Program will continue and grow. 2U is expected to become a new contributor of code to Open edX, which will strengthen the platform and allow it to increase its impact on e-learning initiatives around the world.
On behalf of all the eduNEXT team, we would like to share this exciting news, confirming our commitment with the Open edX technology, the community, and the online learning initiatives powered by Open edX and boosted by our services. We take this announcement with great optimism and continue our mission of collaboratively shaping the future of education.
The eduNEXT Team
